| Girl Talk |
Girl Talk is a program developed to improve communication between fifth and sixth grade girls and their mothers. It helps girls deal with peer pressure and build self-esteem, all with the help of their mothers. The program is a series of four sessions each about two hours in length. Girl Talk is offered in the spring and the fall, usually February and October. The sessions were held at the Denison and Schleswig Middle Schools. Pre-registration is required as the number of mothers and daughters are limited. It is offered in coordination with the Iowa State University (ISU) Extension Office, the school, and the public health agency. A representative from each of these facilities participates in the presentations along with other persons as their time allows. This program has been well accepted and continues to be offered. This past year a Spanish Girl Talk was offered as well as the English version. Both were well attended and from comments received after completion of these sessions the participants felt they received very helpful information. The Spanish session was a condensed version of the English version. One three hour session was held rather than the four sessions.
